I knew my folks were still up talking

I shoved the covers off of my bed
Planned it out inside of my head
I had to see the show

I saw them at the kitchen table
Behind the staircase I was able
To watch them while they play

And Dad said, "Well, it isn't shocking,"
And Mom said, "J. I tried,"

I thought that maybe I could warn her
I was really far too young to say
